Tampere
Tampere is a city located between two lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. These lakes are at different heights, with an 18 meters difference. Due to this difference, the Tammerkoski River flows quickly between them, which has long been a useful resource for producing electricity today. Tampere has a strong history of factories and industry, similar to the city of Manchester in England. For this reason, it is sometimes called the ‘Manchester of Finland,’ and people also call it ‘Manse.’ This nickname has even inspired a local music style called ‘Manserock.’
Tampere is located 173 kilometers from Helsinki and about the same distance from Turku, both accessible by car or train in around two and a half hours. Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is the third busiest airport in the country, serving 200,000 passengers every year.
The city center layout is based on Carl Ludvig Engel, though most buildings date from after 1900. The neo-Renaissance town hall, completed in 1890, stands on the west side of Central Square and now its a symbolic landmark. Tampere also hosts several art museums, including the Hiekka Fine Arts Museum, the Art Museum, and the Sara Hildén Art Museum.
An important historical part of the town is the Pispala, which lies between the lakes of Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi and was once a residential area of workers. Industrial traditions are also attested by the city’s red-brick factory buildings, such as former cotton, locomotives and weapons factories, most of which are now restaurants, entertainment venues, galleries, museums, shops, cinemas and commercial office offices.
Lenin spent his exile in the city between 1905 and 1907 and met Stalin for the first time. The memories of these have been preserved today by the Lenin Museum, built in the building of the meeting.
Tampere’s most famous sights include the Särkänniemi Fun Park, where visitors can enjoy the planetarium, aquarium, dolphinarium, amusement park and six giant roller coasters, as well as the Näsinneula lookout tower with a symbolistic rotating panorama restaurant.
