Lanzarote
Lanzarote is a mysterious volcanic island in the Canary Islands, featuring a breathtaking contrast of long golden sandy beaches, small bays with black sand, volcanic cliffs crashing into the ocean, and the crystal-clear blue waters, all set against the backdrop of smoky craters and lava flows created by volcanic eruptions.
The island of contrasts boasts not only long sandy beaches and secluded coves but also a wealth of natural wonders, including volcanoes, lava fields, partially underwater cave systems, and landscapes that resemble an extraterrestrial world.
Like all other members of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is a biosphere reserve that was designated by UNESCO in 1993, but there is also a nature reserve and a national park. The hilly landscape of all shades of red, ocher, orange, brown and black, the reliefs formed by volcanoes, lava eruptions and other volcanic rocks provide a colorful picture of the process of island formation.
Lanzarote’s capital city, the charming Arrecife, is located along the island’s Middle East coast. The former small fishing village became its headquarters in 1853; its name (arrecife means reef in Spanish) for its volcanic reefs off the coast. Arrecife, with its elegant boutiques and shops, is a shopping paradise. Although Lanzarote does not boast such long and famous beaches as its southern neighbor Fuerteventura, it still has beautiful beaches for relaxing and even surfing. Perhaps the most famous and colorful of all is Papagayo, a seashell-shaped beach covered with small snow-white sand, a paradise for families with small children or snorkeling.
