Barcelona to Sitges
Barcelona is located on the northeast coast of Spain, the country’s second largest city and the capital of Catalonia. The city has a population of over one and a half million. It is one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean.
Its most famous landmark is the Barri Gòtic, or Gothic Quarter. It is historically very diverse, so you can admire buildings from many different periods. Many buildings are World Heritage Sites. For example, the Sagrada Família, the work of the architect Antoni Gaudí, is a church still standing today, which was started in the late 1800s. Some other UNESCO World Heritage Sites include Güell Park, Casa Milà, the Palau de la Música Catalana, which is a concert hall, and the Hospital de Sant Pau.
The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and St. Eulalia, built in the Gothic style in the 1300s, is a beautiful sight. There are also two Gothic basilicas, Santa Maria del Mar and Santa Maria del Pi. There are also Romanesque churches, such as Sant Pau del Camp. Palau Reial Major is known as the residence of medieval kings.
Also of interest is the Royal Dockyard, which is Gothic in style, as is the Pedralbes Monastery. Another point of interest is the Columbus Monument, a 60-metre high monument to the explorer Christopher Columbus.
The Arc de Triomf is a triumphal arch built for the Barcelona Exhibition of 1888. Also worth mentioning are the historic buildings of the University of Barcelona.
Sitges is an enchanting seaside fishing village with beautiful Spanish villas, cafés, long promenades, lively nightlife and a rich culture, popular with Catalan artists.
Sitges is famous for its sandy beaches where visitors can relax, sunbathe and enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine. Stroll through the town centre and admire the picturesque narrow streets with their many cafés, restaurants and shops.
The city’s cultural life is also exciting, with excellent opportunities for film festivals and cultural events. Sitges is famous for its artistic community and boasts a rich collection of museums and galleries.
Sitges is an attractive destination all year round, but is even livelier and more vibrant in the summer months. The charm of the town, its stunning coastline and its colourful cultural life all guarantee that Sitges will be an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
